Three things to do first

    Connect Family Center

    Open Family Center in account settings. Complete the link together in the mobile app; your teen needs to accept.

    Restrict direct messages

    In Content & Social, turn off Direct messages from server members and apply the change to existing servers when prompted.

  3. 3

    Review servers together

    Ask what each community is for, who runs it and what your teen enjoys there. Leave communities that feel unsafe.

Set it up, step by step

    Link supervision

    Use the Family Center linking instructions below. Explain that it shows recent activity and selected settings, not the contents of private conversations.

    Review contact settings

    Open Settings → Content & Social. Review Direct messages, individual server permissions and Friend Requests; limit who can send requests.

    Check sensitive-media settings

    Review the sexual and graphic media filters. Use blocking in DMs where available and blurring in servers. Filters can miss content; blurring is not the same as blocking.

    Separate teen protections from the global rollout

    Discord’s February update delayed global age assurance to the second half of 2026. That announcement does not establish completion. Check the current account’s settings and country-specific requirements; not everyone is asked for ID or a face scan.

    Review activity and limits

    Use Family Center to discuss recent activity. Where shown, check Screen Downtime and the monthly spending cap; the cap excludes subscriptions. Review those separately.

    Practice reporting

    Agree that your teen can show you a troubling message without being blamed. Review the in-app report and block options together.
