Three things to do first

  1. 1

    Check eligibility first

Google currently excludes supervised Gemini Apps accounts in the EEA, including Romania, as well as the UK and Switzerland.

  2. 2

    Check the account being used

Look together at whether it is a personal, supervised or school account. School access depends on the institution’s administrator.

  3. 3

    Agree what stays private

Keep passwords, private photos and identifying details out of prompts. Ask for explanations, then check important answers.

Romania and supervised accounts

Do not follow a US Family Link walkthrough as if it enables Gemini Apps for a supervised account in Romania. Google’s current help excludes the EEA.

Start with this

Check the account and choose one useful learning task to try together before allowing independent use.

What to watch for

Confident errors

High

A clear explanation can still be wrong. Check before acting on an important answer.

Private information in prompts

High

An uploaded worksheet or screenshot may include names, photos or other details that were not needed.

A tool becoming a confidant

High

Notice when AI use replaces asking people for help or spending time with friends.

Another account bypassing expectations

High

Review actual access together rather than assuming one device setting covers every login.

Set it up, step by step

  1. 1

    Identify the account

Open the account menu together. A school login and a personal login can have different access and data rules; ask the school how its account is managed.

  2. 2

Use Family Link only where supported

For an eligible supervised account outside the excluded regions: Family Link → select child → Controls → Gemini → Gemini Apps. Review whether access is on or off. Do not remove supervision or change a birthday to bypass eligibility.

  3. 3

    Review privacy settings

Read the Gemini Privacy Hub for the account in use. Where Keep Activity is available, review it together; turning it off does not mean every chat is immediately deleted or that no safety review occurs.

  4. 4

    Review connected services and uploads

Before allowing access to another app or uploading a file, discuss what information the task needs. Avoid sharing documents containing other people’s personal details.

  5. 5

    Practice checking an answer

Try a school question together and ask the child to explain the answer in their own words. Check claims using a textbook or a reliable original source.

  6. 6

    Report a concerning response

Use the response feedback option for inappropriate or incorrect output. Agree that the child can stop a conversation and ask a trusted person for help.

Sources and availability

Checked against published guidance. Settings have not been tested in a child account; menus and availability can vary.

Availability: Supervised Gemini Apps accounts are unavailable in the EEA, UK and Switzerland. Other account types have their own eligibility rules. This guide covers Gemini Apps, not every Google AI feature.
