Medium-high risk

A multiplayer game with player communication and purchases. Check both the Epic account and the console or store used to pay.

Three things to do first

  1. 1

    Set an Epic parent PIN

Open Parental Controls in the Epic Account Portal and keep the PIN private.

  2. 2

    Restrict communication

Choose Nobody or a limited friends option for voice and text chat in Epic parental controls.

  3. 3

    Check each payment route

Review Epic payment approval and the console’s own purchase controls. Agree on a budget for existing V-Bucks too.

What controls cannot do

A purchase PIN for one store does not cover every way of paying. Review the console store and currency already in the account.

Start with this

Set the Epic parent PIN, then agree on chat permissions and a real-money budget together.

What to watch for

Pressure from other players

High

Your child should be able to mute or leave a conversation that becomes threatening or uncomfortable.

Currency feels less like money

High

Discuss the real cost before buying currency and before spending it.

Fake reward offers

Medium

Do not enter passwords or login codes on pages promising free V-Bucks.

One more match

Medium

Check whether matches repeatedly push bedtime later than agreed.

Set it up, step by step

  1. 1

    Review the account age

Below 13 or the local digital-consent age, whichever is higher, Epic uses a Cabined Account. Voice and free-text chat remain unavailable pending parental consent. Review permissions before consenting.

  2. 2

    Set contact boundaries

In Epic parental controls, review voice chat, text chat and the PIN requirement for adding friends. Agree who your child may play and talk with.

  3. 3

    Protect real-money purchases

Enable the PIN requirement for Epic payments. It does not control purchases through other platform stores or spending existing V-Bucks; review those separately.

  4. 4

    Understand the $100 threshold

For under-13 accounts, Epic describes a $100 daily Epic-payment threshold that a parent PIN can override. It excludes other platform payments and in-game currency. It is not your family’s spending budget.

  5. 5

    Review random-item spending

Where offered, turn off Allow Paid Random Items if you do not want V-Bucks spent on random rewards. This is not a block on every V-Bucks purchase.

  6. 6

    Agree on stopping points

Choose session end times and review spending together. Check the store used for each payment when investigating an unexpected charge.

Sources and availability

Checked against published guidance. Settings have not been tested in a child account; menus and availability can vary.

Availability: Epic controls and other platform-store controls are separate. Some options depend on age and region.
